Several years ago, when I was hiring a nanny, I found myself struggling to communicate relevant and important information with our new nanny in a clear, concise and easily understandable format. As a chartered accountant and a self-professed “control-freak”, I suffered serious anxiety over making sure that I had provided our nanny with the most comprehensive set of schedules that I could! I spoke to all the parents I could find who had already hired caregivers and polled them about what type of information was important to share with our new nanny. I drafted and re-drafted pages of schedules and data, and through this process I began to discover that there was a lot of stuff that I wanted to share. It took me a long time to figure out how to present these details clearly and concisely to our new nanny, but the result was a “family manual” of pages that our nanny often referred to so that she could familiarize herself with every aspect of life in our home.
Pretty soon other parents hiring nannies began to ask me if they could use my little homemade manual. Friends visiting our home started noticing my forms and asking for copies to share with their nannies! Parents who were using my forms began to urge me to make my forms available to other parents welcoming new nannies, babysitters, or caregivers into their homes. At first I didn’t think much of it… but then it hit me… what if I had these forms available to me back when I hired my nanny? I would have saved myself so much time and stress!
